Many people are not aware that there is a body of highly skilled professional jewellers, gold and silversmiths who have come together to form an association called the Gold and Silversmiths Guild of Australia.

Guild LogoThe Guild carries the strength of highly skilled professionals coming together to have a set of common goals for those who work in precious metals and you can be reassured that a Guild member has to abide by the strict codes of practice set down by the Federal Guild Council in making jewellery to the highest level of expertise and professionalism. All potential Guild members have to submit a piece of jewellery made by the applicant to assess their level of craftsmanship before being accepted.

Kay is a proud member of the Guild that allows her to use four Guildmarks for identification, her highest standard of quality craftsmanship and antique status for years to come. The Guildmarks are very similar to the Hallmarks in England.

Kay's marks she stamps in her work are her makers mark, KS inside an oval which is her signature, that is registered with the Gold and Silversmiths Guild and displayed on this website, the purity mark which is 925 (sterling silver) 375 (9ct), 585 (14ct), 750 (18ct), 22ct (916) and Plat (Platinum), the Guildmark which is the Kangaroo head in a square set on an angle that is displayed on the home page, and the date letter stamp using the letters of the alphabet which change each year. If a valuer recognises the Guildmarks, all he/she has to do is contact the maker for relevant information for the valuation assessment to be written as accurate as possible which is far better than seeing one mark, the purity mark only.

There is one valuer who Kay highly recommends and his name is Ronnie Bauer who is one of Australia's highly respected valuers and a lecturer in antique valuation. You can access his website on the "links" page with the name "Klepners".  Ronnie is a very big supporter and endorses the Guild and what it stands for. He also strongly recommends the public to have their jewellery made and guild marked by a Guild member for proper identification for years to come.

After all is said and done, it is finally your decision on how you would like your jewellery to be made.
